Pneumatic pipeline systems present some very specific challenges. Often, they are suspended over equipment or even pass between buildings. While the material being moved may appear lightweight, the volume and velocity result in significant wear to mild steel piping systems, particularly at areas where there is a change in direction. Accessing these systems for maintenance and repair usually requires system shutdown and may expose workers to hazardous conditions. Even one unreliable component in a pneumatic system can create headaches and expensive downtime.
One solution is to increase the radius of the bend in order to make the transition smoother, but that may require new mounting hardware or be impractical based on the location of other equipment. Our team encountered this complicated scenario with several customers, so we set our engineers on solving this problem.
Their knowledge and experience resulted in the ULTRA TECH EXTENDED LIFE ELBOW (XLE).
The XLE Line of elbows are heavy walled and cast from steel with high manganese content. They excel in pneumatic applications. The impact from pneumatic applications actually hardens the inner wall of the elbow over time!
One customer tried several options for a trouble spot in their foundry sand transport system. Our engineers tackled the problem and developed the XLE Extended Life Elbow.
In this real-world application, the 4″ XLE transported over 4 million pounds of sand and lasted for a full year. When inspected, that elbow still had half of its wall thickness intact.
